Gertrude was born in Kezi district and has been a high school English teacher, as well as a college and university lecturer. She spent nine years teaching in Northern Nigeria, and has also worked for the Bulawayo Legal Project Centre as administrator and for the Contact Family Counselling Centre as co-ordinator. Recently, after spending several years at the University of Swaziland as Dean of the Faculty of Education, she returned to Bulawayo.
